Abstract

The attention for the monument cames out from the identification of an identity value by the local realities. In fact, the area of Ascoli Satriano presents various emergencies ranging from the Daunian period to the Roman colonization. In particular, the bridge that crosses the Carapelle is documented by the sources and constitutes the tangible proof of the continuity of attendance at the site over time. The Province, Traffic Sector, is still responsible for the Monument as it is still accessible to vehicles. In fact, the bridge is the only alternative territorial link to the fast-flowing road system. After an initial intervention to safeguard for the bridge implemented by the Province in agreement with the Consortium for the Drainage of the Capitanata on the cue of the MIC Regional Secretariat substantiated in the construction of a spillway channel that would reduce the impact of the torrential and very unstable river branch on the monument, in 2022 was started an intervention of knowledge and conservative restoration with the aim of restoring the curtains in the damaged parts by the floods of the stream and restoring the monumental image of the asset. The activities undertaken during the start-up phase of the restoration works concerned a phase of excavation of the earthen stratifications aimed at highlighting the constructive characteristics of the bridge. A campaign of scientific investigations followed (georadar investigation, sonar investigation, cataloging of erratic stone blocks and gaps in the monument’s facing) conducted by the Specialization School in Architectural and Landscape Heritage of the Polytechnic of Bari.
