Ancient villages built in caves in Southern Italy are a unique architecture that preserved precious information about a lost reality. The present study describes a series of analyses performed in order to assess the conservation state of the wall paintings of San Giovanni’s church located in the countryside of Fasano, Apulia region. The mineralogic-petrographic and chemico-physical analyses performed on samples withdrawn from the interior wall paintings of the church, provided several useful information. It was possible to understand the nature of the original materials employed, such as pigments and binders media, and to achieve a punctual description of the stratigraphy. All this information were fundamental in order to understand the painting technique employed. The analytical characterization of the coloured plasters and the identification of the occurring biological degradation, depicted the conservation state of the wall paintings of the church. The data acquired were necessary to plan a proper conservative restoration intervention and also supplied information about the history and evolution of this original building.
