From 2012 to 2016, the Ancient City of Aleppo has been the scene of a battle, which has resulted in a humanitarian and urban crisis. The conflict has also heavily altered the morphology of the urban landscape. This damage has meant the destruction of the inherited urban culture of a site that is now deeply affected by new morphologies created by the battle. Today, in order to rebuild its traditional urban morphology, we need to develop methodological approaches and critical tools for a sound reconstruction of this fragile environment, which was once a sustainable and green city. Through the analysis of the case studies of Sarajevo, Beirut and Nicosia, this chapter aims at considering design strategies based on landscape design. They can contribute to creating new values for the recovery of the Ancient City of Aleppo by placing special emphasis on open spaces and places of cultural significance, where to transform the narrative of memory into the narrative of the local identity, also focussing on the role of these civic spaces as reconciliation places.
