This paper investigates the outcomes of a preliminary survey conducted in the Santarella Archive, Milan, in which this author took part on the invitation of the Archeoclub and in agreement with the owner of the private archives of the engineer’s family. The present study focuses on the materials in Luigi Santarella’s professional archive pertaining to his early works, as well as to his editorial activities. A significant part of this documentation regards assignments carried out in Apulia between 1911 and 1916. Considered in the context of the development of technical cultures in the region at the beginning of the twentieth century, the mansions Santarella designed for wealthy clients demonstrate his role among the protagonists of the dissemination of building techniques in reinforced concrete in those territories. The cement plants in Barletta, Brindisi and Taranto illuminate Santarella’s contribution as designer and shareholder of investing companies in founding an industrial “culture of cement” in Apulia. The present study intends to analyze the relevance of these early works pointing at further lines of inquiry that these examples suggest towards an in-depth reflection on the work of Santarella overall.

Abstract
The present study intends to analyze the relevance of these early works pointing at further lines of inquiry that these examples suggest towards an in-depth reflection on the work of Santarella overall.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
