Conceived and curated by Anna De Palma with the scientific support of this author, this exhibition, which opened in Corato on 15 September 2023 on the occasion of the related Study Day on Luigi Santarella, presented to both scholars and the general public (and especially to a younger generation) a selection of mostly unpublished materials (drawings, original book editions, photographs, and documents) from the Santarella Archive based in Milan. Set up on the ground floor of the house designed by Santarella for Antonio Capano in 1913 (known as “Palazzo Santarella”), the exhibition was organized into two sections. In the first section, the materials on display documented the reconstruction of the biographical profile of Luigi Santarella, his scientific production with the publisher Ulrico Hoepli, which over decades has contributed to training more than a generation of Italian engineers, and his professional engagement in the construction of bridges in reinforced concrete. In the second section, on view were documents and drawings pertaining to Santarella’s civil and industrial projects and works in Apulia, spanning the years from 1911 to 1916, that is, his first years of professional practice since graduating in engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan in 1910. These early works are still little-researched and were presented together for the first time in the exhibition, offering fresh insights and opening new lines of inquiry for further in-depth, systematic studies. In the following pages, an extensive review of the materials on display is published, digitally reproduced by Archeoclub d’Italia, under the permission and courtesy of the Santarella Archive of Milan.
