This paper offers a critical analysis of the Greek term λιμήν (limèn), traditionally used to denote the port, by examining its occurrences and semantic nuances in ancient literary sources. Framed within the broader context of studies on Mediterranean “connectivity”, the port emerges as both a functional and symbolic node within infrastructur- al systems linking land and sea routes. Through the comparison of various terms found in Greek and Latin texts, the pa- per identifies functional distinctions between commercial harbours, military ports, and mooring facilities, highlighting how ancient perceptions and descriptions of port areas were strongly shaped by their internal organization, defensive role, and relationship with the urban fabric. The result is a methodological reflection on the semantic and topographical role of the port in the geographical imagination of the ancient world.

Abstract
The result is a methodological reflection on the semantic and topographical role of the port in the geographical imagination of the ancient world.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
