Archaeological research in Taranto has long highlighted the importance of funerary representations in the ancient city, especially from the 4th century B.C. onwards and throughout the Hellenistic period. Excavations have brought to light sectors of the necropolis with different types of burials accompanied by as many types of external markers, including the well-known naiskoi, funerary aedicules characterised by the peculiar Tarentine Corinthian architectural order and accompanied by a developed figurative decoration carved in local stone. The phases of development of the modern city, however, have often resulted in the dispersion of material and the loss of documentation useful for the overall reconstruction of the phenomenon, especially the connection between the burials and their external markers. For this reason, there are still problems of interpretation, such as the genesis and development of Tarentine funerary architecture, production methods and chronology of the semata. In view of a study project aimed at reconstructing the naiskoi and, more generally, the funerary landscape of Taranto, the contribution aims to offer an updated summary of the state of research on the semata preserved in Taranto, highlighting problematic aspects and suggesting lines of development for future research.

Abstract
In view of a study project aimed at reconstructing the naiskoi and, more generally, the funerary landscape of Taranto, the contribution aims to offer an updated summary of the state of research on the semata preserved in Taranto, highlighting problematic aspects and suggesting lines of development for future research.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
