Briar Levit’s 2024 volume On Design, Feminism and Friendship, published by the Portuguese independent publisher Bikini Books, contributes to the growing international debate on the relationship between graphic design and feminism. Structured as a dialogue with designer and curator Nina Paim, the book approaches feminism not merely as a theoretical framework, but as an urgent political, educational, and design practice. The review highlights how the publication belongs to a broader movement aimed at redefining the canon of graphic design history by recovering marginalized figures, overlooked experiences, and alternative narratives. Levit, professor at Portland State University and co-director of The People’s Graphic Design Archive, retraces the key stages of her professional and academic trajectory, showing how her design practice has been shaped by inclusion, collaboration, and feminist activism. The review also emphasizes Levit’s strong commitment to collaborative and community-oriented practices, regarded as fundamental aspects of a feminist methodology in design. Finally, attention is given to the author’s use of clear, accessible, and inclusive language, interpreted as a deliberate political and cultural choice. In this perspective, graphic design emerges not only as a visual practice, but also as a form of open, participatory, and socially engaged communication.
