Abstract

This paper investigates earthen architecture as both a historical heritage and a contemporary field of innovation. While widely studied and preserved, earthen constructions remain vulner able to environmental, seismic, and socio-eco nomic factors, requiring continuous mainte nance and active human engagement to ensure their survival. Beyond conservation, the conti nuity of building practices is essential to sustain both the material and its cultural memory. Re cent research has renewed interest in raw earth for its sustainability, low embodied energy, and compatibility with circular economy principles, integrating traditional techniques with digital fabrication. Within this framework, the study reinterprets the Nubian vault as a structural principle for additive manufacturing. By trans lating its inclined construction logic into layered extrusion, it demonstrates the possibility of cre ating self-supporting vaulted structures with out supports. The Malandra Vecchia case study exemplifies this approach, combining historical knowledge and advanced technologies into a co herent, sustainable design strategy.
