Results showed DDT compounds were the prevalent organochlorine pesticides determined. Overall, the most frequently detected isomers were p,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDE. DDT source in the investigated sediment was attributable to historical residues.

Abstract

The Sarno River develops across an area (Sarno Plain, Campania Region, Southern Italy) with a high demographic impact where insist intensive agriculture and several industries. Consequently, many contaminants arrive in the sea and can be widely deposited on the continental shelf. The research represents a preliminary study, aimed at investigating the levels, spatial distributions, and possible sources of legacy chlorine pesticides (OCPs) including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its primary metabolites dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and (DDD), α, β, and γ hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs), Aldrin, Dieldrin, Alaclor, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seafloor sediments offshore the Sarno plain (Naples Bay, Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea). Results showed DDT compounds were the prevalent organochlorine pesticides determined. Overall, the most frequently detected isomers were p,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDE. DDT source in the investigated sediment was attributable to historical residues.
