The aim of this work is to design an optical device for contouring of dental elements. Non-contact optical measurements can allow a higher accuracy in reconstruction to be achieved as well as they increase significantly the comfort of the patient. In view of this, a measurement device, based on the projection of the pattern of lines result of the interference between the wave-fronts emerging from two optical fibers, is realized. A hierarchical unwrapping framework operating on fringe modulation and fringe contrast is implemented in order to deal with pattern discontinuities unavoidably introduced by the sharpness of dental surfaces. Results obtained on calibrated specimens and 3D models of dental elements confirm the validity of the proposed approach. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2013.
