The regulations of dams, which have been recently modernized in Italy, introduced special constraints for the design of morning glory spillways when they are used to evacuate reservoir floods in fill dams. Based on these instructions, the design of such works should be subject to the saturation condition and their feasibility to geometrical and physical constraints. A numerical investigation has been carried out, giving to the parameters appearing in the formulas the most adequate values resulting from either theoretical or experimental studies. The results of this investigation proved the influence of the new regulations upon the feasibility limits of such works. Moreover, it seems possible to extend the use of morning glory spillways by shaping adequately the well and the connecting curved duct to the tunnel.
