A new methodology of Hydrochemical Facies Analysis has been drawn up. The use of this methodology in the study of salinization problems of coastal aquifers allows to differentiate the stages of active seawater intrusion from the stages of refreshening. The methodology defines that each stage is characterized by a different hydrochemical facies sequence. The recognition of the sequence allows to outline the real conditon of the aquifers as far as the seawater intrusion processes are concerned, i.e. if the aquifers are under the prevailing influence of intruding seawater or feeding fresh waters. This recognition is carried out in an effective and detached way, being more difficult to obtain similar information through the traditional approaches based on the evaluation of salinity and hydrogeological data. The methodology has been applied in the framework of the studies of salinization processes of Oropesa Plain aquifer. In this case it has been determined that variations of intrusion front position, due to the succession of humid and dry periods, correspond to variations in type and sequence of hydrochemical facies

Abstract
