The paper describes characteristics of integrated optical systems and components implemented on lithium niobate capable of performing functions of a high innovative potential as required by the most recent applications in robotics, optical calculations, coherent optics transmissions, signal analysis and signal processing. The results obtained with such modules, their potentialities and latest developments which permit their use in appropriate commercial systems are described. The interrelationships between automation, computer technology, telecommunications, automatic calculation, are discussed.
