This book investigates the design and construction methods that were imported by the Italian maîtres d’oeuvre active in Egypt between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, particularly in Alexandria, and includes an in-depth study of the work of the architect Mario Rossi, whose most important work was in the design of mosques. Taking these and his other residential buildings in Alexandria and elsewhere as case studies, his personality and work are reconstructed in their space-time context. This leads to the definition of two prevalent attitudes that oscillated between a tendency to import ideas from Italy and a tendency to assimilate the local tradition. In the conviction that contemporary architecture too must develop its own stylistic and constructional characteristics in accordance with multiple local traditions, the Author shows how in Rossi’s work the complex global phenomenon of eclecticism, as an historic moment of transition and transformation animated by the search for a "new style" capable of being defined as "modern" and profoundly marked by new technologies and materials imported from Europe, was the expression of a "crisis" in the language of building which, in her view, nevertheless seemed to be resisted by the cultural continuity of typological processes. By re-situating Rossi's work within a process of historic and design continuity (in the light of some critical fixed points identified as elements inherited from Mamluk, Ottoman, and nineteenth-century tradition) and "excavating" his background and ideas (reconstructing them via intensive research to identify and recover dispersed sources), rationality and legitimacy are accorded to what was in effect an "ideological programme" of architecture in which building types, technologies, and languages were brought up to date without losing sight at any stage of the two-way link between design and construction, between technical form and aesthetic form, and between architecture and city. It is the Author’s conviction, in fact, that the history of the one is inextricably linked to the history of the other. More than ever in today's age of globalisation, the work of interpreting Mario Rossi's mosque architecture as a veritable process of cultural, typological, technological, and stylistic integration between the Orient and the West is a timely invitation to reflect on the need to respect local identities and integrate with them.

L’indagine condotta nel presente libro è rivolta al modo di progettare e costruire importato, tra il diciannovesimo ed il ventesimo secolo, dai maîtres d’oeuvre italiani operanti in Egitto, in particolare ad Alessandria, con un approfondimento dell’opera di Mario Rossi. Attraverso il caso delle architetture residenziali di Alessandria, si vuole contestualizzare spazialmente e temporalmente la ricostruzione del personaggio Mario Rossi, distintosi per aver progettato innanzitutto moschee. Si giunge a definire due atteggiamenti prevalenti, protesi tra volontà di importazione e volontà di assimilazione, che dimostrano come il complesso e globale fenomeno dell’Eclettismo (momento storico di transizione e trasformazione, animato dalla ricerca di un “nuovo stile” che potesse definirsi “moderno”, profondamente segnato dall’esportazione europea di nuove possibilità tecniche e materiali) rappresenti l’espressione di un momento di “crisi” del linguaggio edilizio a cui sembra resistere, tuttavia, secondo l’autrice, la continuità culturale dei processi tipologici, nella convinzione che l’architettura contemporanea possa e debba sviluppare i propri caratteri stilistici e costruttivi in accordo con le molteplici tradizioni locali. Ricollocando l’opera di Rossi in un processo di continuità storico-progettuale (alla luce di alcuni nodi critici riconosciuti come elementi ereditati dalla tradizione mamelucca, ottomana ed ottocentesca), “scavando” nel suo percorso formativo ed ideativo (ricostruito attraverso un intenso lavoro di individuazione e recupero delle fonti disperse), l’autrice restituisce razionalità e leicità di un “programma ideologico” dell’architettura inteso come processo di aggiornamento dei tipi, delle tecniche, dei linguaggi, senza perdere mai di vista il duplice legame esistente tra progetto e costruzione, tra forma tecnica e forma estetica, tra architettura e città, nella convinzione che la storia dell’una sia indissolubilmente legata alla storia dell’altra. Interpretando il progetto delle moschee rossiane come un vero e proprio processo di integrazione culturale, tipologica, tecnologica, stilistica tra Oriente ed Occidente, il presente libro vuole sollecitare una quanto mai attuale riflessione sul rispetto e l’integrazione delle identità locali nell’odierna Era della Globalizzazione.
