Campania and Apulia are two important Southern Italy regions with many similarities. The main aim of this study is comparing waste management of these two regions to learn some lessons as well as to draw future perspectives. Campania region was not able to manage all the collected municipal solid waste (MSW). On the other hand, Apulia region was able to treat more MSW than those produced. In Campania region, in 2014, the main typology of special waste was those deriving from the treatment of waste and wastewater, while in Apulia region the main production resulted from demolition and construction waste. Special waste were not landfilled in Campania region, because there were not landfills. Source separation is fundamental to address the EU waste management priorities, but it is a non-sense without treatment and disposal facilities.
