The aim of the paper is to present a modal identification of the bell tower of San Nicola Church in Adelfia (Bari, Italy). The tower built in the 1744, is made by masonry walls, has a total height of 23 m and a square plan section of 4.20 m side. The main objective is the validation of a 3D refined finite element model of the church and the bell tower for a subsequent vulnerability analysis. With this aim, on the bell tower dynamical experimental tests have been performed by recording the vibrations induced by environmental actions. The available data have been elaborated by means of Operational Modal Analysis operating in the frequency domain. The identified modal characteristics of the bell tower are quite the same for all the performed tests, and make confidence about the accuracy of the results. Moreover, the comparison between the experimental results and the finite element model shows a good agreement, and thus validates the use of such model.
