Ricerca archeologica e valorizzazione: riflessioni sul Parco Archeologico di Byllis (Albania)

Since 2014, the Department of Civil Engineering and Architectural Sciences of the Polytechnic of Bari has started a new research on the ancient city of Byllis, in central southern Albania, thanks to an agreement with the Institute of Archeology of Tirana. The city is an interesting example of the urbanization process that transformed the landscape of the valley of the river Vjosa in Greek and Roman period. It was laid out according to a regular plan and marked by characteristic fortified walls and agora, showing a complex representative system through the theatrum and the stadium, and other monuments such a large cistern to collect water and the stoai. Aim of the new research is to reconstruct the image of the ancient city, favoring its more specific contextualization within the urbanism of the inter-Adriatic area and, more generally, of the Mediterranean framework of the Hellenistic and Roman age. At the same time the research offers a useful opportunity to analyze the current state of art concerning the ancient city, which became an Archaeological Park in 2006, and to propose some guidelines to increase the site’s accessibility for visitors.

Dal 2014 il Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Ingegneria Civile e dell’Architettura del Politecnico di Bari ha avviato un’attività di ricerca sull’antica città di Byllis, nell’Albania centro meridionale, sulla base di un accordo di collaborazione scientifica con l’Istituto di Archeologia di Tirana. La città rappresenta un importante caso di studio per lo sviluppo dell’urbanizzazione del territorio della valle del fiume Vojussa nell’età greca e romana; essa fu pianificata secondo una griglia urbana regolare; caratteristici sono il suo circuito murario e l’agorà, che mostra un sistema articolato di teatro-stadio, una cisterna monumentale per la raccolta delle acque e stoai. Le nuove ricerche ora in corso sono state avviate con la finalità di ricostruire, anche virtualmente, l’immagine della città antica, favorendone una più specifica contestualizzazione nell’urbanistica dell’area interadriatica e, più in generale, del contesto mediterraneo di età ellenistica e romana. Nello stesso tempo tale attività offre un’utile occasione di analisi dello stato attuale del sito, divenuto Parco Archeologico nel 2006, consentendo di proporre alcune linee guida per potenziarne il valore in termini di fruibilità da parte dei visitatori.
