Abstract

The known portion of the the so-called “residential district” of Egnatia was excavated by the Superintendent Quagliati in the early 1900s; it has been now studied by the Research Unit of the Bari Polytechnic within the Project Miur Firb 2012, Archeology of the landscapes of Adriatic Apulian in the Roman age: innovative technologies for sustainable planning and an identity fruition. The Bari Polytechnic analysed its architectural and urban form, enlightning on the building transformations from the pre-Roman period to the late antique. Even though this area has never had a primary vocation in the urban fabric, it nevertheless allows us to define the qualities of the various phases. In fact it is possible to read a morphological-typological variation in the building and road that corresponds to the variations in use: an ancient phase, apparently subject to a strong influence of Greek culture, in which this area appears to be characterized by representative buildings with a public function and perhaps an urban scenic backdrop. Subsequently, the fabric of the domus of Greek inspiration goes to overwrite these buildings and the regular road system of the city, gradually incorporating public spaces. The monumental character of the domus is gradually reduced, until, in late antiquity, with the construction of the Christian basilica, the urban sector seems to regain importance and take evidence in the urban profile with the embankment of the basilica and at least one of the domus with a second level (the only one ascertained in the city).
