A novel oscillator design technique based on two-port SAW resonators is described. This technique makes it possible to measure the most critical oscillator features, i.e., resonator loaded Q/insertion loss and amplifier phase/amplitude characteristic. This procedure ensures the achievement of a good tradeoff between specific oscillator performances like FM phase noise and frequency tuning span, with the additional feature of a stable, stress-free frequency setting. Experimental results for several oscillator prototypes in the 591-1090-MHz range are reported. An important feature of the proposed configuration is open-loop testability.

Abstract

A novel oscillator design technique based on two-port SAW resonators is described. This technique makes it possible to measure the most critical oscillator features, i.e., resonator loaded Q/insertion loss and amplifier phase/amplitude characteristic. This procedure ensures the achievement of a good tradeoff between specific oscillator performances like FM phase noise and frequency tuning span, with the additional feature of a stable, stress-free frequency setting. Experimental results for several oscillator prototypes in the 591-1090-MHz range are reported. An important feature of the proposed configuration is open-loop testability.
