The essay refers to the relationship between urban and ground forms: its issue is the one of the cities that establish a direct visual and spatial relationship with the natural landscape of the ravines, erosions of fluvial origin that impacted the territory of Puglia and Lucania. These represent entirely themselves, as a single element of finished form as their topological characters are in close relation with the topography of the site. Their formal structure is due to two settlement models each capable of expressing a different relationship with the orographic form: the ‘city of plateau’ and ‘theatroids city’. Laterza is the ‘city of plateau’, built on the summit of a relief internal in the space of the ravine, convex and with a measure exactly corresponding ti the form of the promontory of which constitutes its completion. This translates the circling of the ravine around itself appearing as an island-city that establishes a relationship of radiation of urban space inside the ravine. Matera is the ‘theatroids city’, located on the concave side of the ravine, of which it interprets its space by building itself as a ‘inhabited cavea’ oriented toward a center, represented by the cathedral. Around the latter the city builds a punctual system of benchmarks and a complex of squares that organically concludes the city and the space of the ravine.
