Abstract

This paper identifies and describes the desire to stay in certain places, to inhabit and to take care of them, favoring their recovery and enhancement. Settlements and artifacts are indispensable elements for the knowledge of the territory. In this perspective, the reasons for the enhancement and redevelopment of historical places are inserted, which despite taking on the poetics of "re-use" and "sustainability", try, through the techniques and methods of interdisciplinarity, to bring the phenomenon of deterioration or "Creative destruction" to an irreplaceable identity and historical memory value. A theoretical choice that interprets and places the architectural project as a measure and condition for practical activity. This is the fate of small historical centers: abandoned, transfigured, aimed at the deterioration of their historical housing heritage and, consequently, at the impoverishment of the "productive" fabric; at their isolation and finally, unfortunately, also at their depopulation. This condition is producing substantial changes on an anthropological and architectural level, often with obvious damage. The signing of an agreement between the Polytechnic of Bari and the Club “I Borghi più Belli d’Italia” was the occasion to draw up a program for the redevelopment of the small Apulian Municipalities, some of which belonged to the European network "Borghi Vivi". This opportunity allowed us to analyze and propose a model of sustainable local development. The network of the “Borghi” collects and connects, in a quality tourist circuit, the small centers of the Mediterranean, accredited by the attribution of the aforementioned brand. The same Regional Law n. 44/2013 (Provisions for the recovery, protection, and enhancement of the most beautiful towns in Italy in Apulia), represents an important opportunity to support protection actions aimed at safeguarding the historic Apulian villages, an image promotion tool of regional territory, within the segment of quality tourism.
