When teaching urban planning, the comprehension of its role and meaning is at least as necessary as the technical knowledge, as the subject often has to deal with changes not yet or not always decipherable.Although it has been deeply changing over the last decades, urban planning keeps be-ing founded on space and society: the references to common interest, to collectivity, to the value and primacy of the community on the one hand, and on the other hand the characteristics of urban space, its materials, its representation, its symbols and its physical and spatial dimensions, all need today to be taught with attention to the new generations’ reference points.The concepts of space and community have in fact taken on new shapes, having broad-ened their references and modified spatial behaviours as well as the idea of space itself. And how has the feeling of community changed in its new manifold declinations?Being the young generations the true recipients of the teaching, it is then necessary, as a foundation to the teaching itself, to investigate permanencies and mutations in their approach, competences, interests, perception of the subject and of space itself

In presenza di cambiamenti non ancora o non sempre del tutto decifrabili, nell’in-segnamento dell’urbanistica la comprensione del suo ruolo e del suo senso necessaria almeno quanto la conoscenza tecnica.Sebbene trasformata profondamente negli ultimi decenni, spazio e società restano a fondamento dell’urbanistica; i riferimenti all’interesse generale, alla collettività, al valore e al primato della comunità, da un lato, e i caratteri dello spazio urbano, i suoi mate-riali urbani, la sua rappresentazione, i suoi simboli, le sue dimensioni più prettamente fisiche e spaziali, dall’altro, necessitano oggi, nell’insegnamento, di essere commisurati ai riferimenti assunti dalle nuove generazioni.I concetti di comunità e di spazio hanno infatti assunto forme nuove, hanno ampliato e diversificato i loro riferimenti, hanno modificato i comportamenti spaziali e l’idea stesso di spazio. L’accresciuta mobilità, la sempre maggior frequentazione dello spazio virtuale, gli stili di vita sempre più individuali, la rappresentazione di uno spazio sempre meno concreto influenzano l’idea di spazio e di spazio urbano in particolare. A esempio, la vita quotidiana dei giovani in quali spazi concreti e virtuali si muove? E la cultura gio-vanile, nelle sue varie forme, che tipo di spazio rappresenta? E come è cambiato il senso di comunità nelle sue nuove e molteplici declinazioni? È necessario quindi, come fonda-mento dell’insegnare, indagare permanenze e mutazioni di approccio, di competenze, di interessi, di percezione della disciplina e ancor prima di percezione dello spazio stesso da parte delle giovani generazioni ‘destinatarie’ dell’insegnamento
