The features of magnetic materials depend on microscopic interactions at the atomic and molecular level. We classify these materials on the basis of their response to an applied external field. At this scope, we define the susceptibility and, thus, review the main features of each class of magnetic specimen. We also describe ferromagnetic materials in terms of the hysteresis phenomenon and magnetic domains, soft and hard behaviour. Finally, we discuss different examples of magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract

The features of magnetic materials depend on microscopic interactions at the atomic and molecular level. We classify these materials on the basis of their response to an applied external field. At this scope, we define the susceptibility and, thus, review the main features of each class of magnetic specimen. We also describe ferromagnetic materials in terms of the hysteresis phenomenon and magnetic domains, soft and hard behaviour. Finally, we discuss different examples of magnetic anisotropy.
