La chiesa di San Francesco a Fermo. Storia, Arte, Architettura e restauri

The church of San Francesco is an emblematic monument with a high symbolic value for the city of Fermo. Centuries-old place of faith and equally living testimony of art and history, the church captures the attention of the visitor, as well as the scholar, for the solemn beauty, the essentiality of the volumes, the wide and slender internal space, the sobriety of the lines , the measured plastic accents. The wise use of brick, which confirms the rule of building "secundum loci conditionem et morem patriae" in compliance with local practices, is combined with the use of terracotta decorations which, thanks to their delicate chromatic and chiaroscuro effects, they discreetly add to the essentiality of Franciscan architecture, intentionally simple and humble in harmony with the Franciscan Rule. Rich palimpsest that summarizes almost eight centuries of history, the church of San Francesco offers the starting point for grasping over time the dialectic between innovation, conservation, restoration to pristine condition, which is often at the center of repeated controversies, particularly useful for understanding the mutation of values that is always inherent in restoration, undeniably linked to the contingencies of history and culture. Although there are still some knots to be resolved in the complex evolutionary history of the factory, the text offers an updated synthesis of the knowledge acquired so far, which is reworked in this volume in order to offer a tool aimed at spreading the knowledge of a testimony of art and history , but also of a critical conscience, which is the preliminary moment and the irreplaceable presupposition for the purposes of conservation.

La chiesa di san Francesco è per la città di Fermo un monumento emblematico dall’elevato valore simbolico. Luogo secolare di fede e testimonianza altrettanto viva di arte e di storia, la chiesa catalizza l’attenzione del visitatore, come dello studioso, per la solenne bellezza, l’essenzialità dei volumi, l’ampia e slanciata spazialità interna, la sobrietà delle linee, i misurati accenti plastici. L’uso sapiente del mattone, che conferma la regola di costruire “secundum loci conditionem et morem patriae” in conformità alle pratiche locali, si coniuga con l’impiego delle decorazioni in cotto le quali, grazie ai loro delicati effetti cromatici e chiaroscurali, si aggiungono con discrezione all’essenzialità dell’architettura francescana, intenzionalmente semplice ed umile in sintonia con la Regola francescana. Ricco palinsesto che riassume quasi otto secoli di storia, la chiesa di San Francesco offre lo spunto per cogliere nel tempo la dialettica tra innovazione, conservazione, restituzione in pristino, la quale spesso è al centro di reiterate polemiche, particolarmente utili per comprendere la mutazione dei valori che è sempre insita nel restauro, innegabilmente legato alle contingenze della storia e della cultura. Nonostante permangano ancora alcuni nodi da sciogliere della complessa storia evolutiva della fabbrica, il testo propone una sintesi aggiornata delle conoscenze acquisite finora, che vengono rielaborate in questo volume allo scopo di offrire uno strumento finalizzato alla diffusione della conoscenza di una testimonianza di arte e di storia, ma anche di una coscienza critica, che è il momento preliminare e il presupposto insostituibile ai fini della conservazione.
