In this work, with the aim of optimizing a low-cost needle microwave applicator for cancer therapy, different approaches are investigated. In particular, a number of needle microwave applicators are designed and refined by exploiting different technical solutions, each of them allowing peculiar advantages and drawbacks. After a comparison, a prototype is constructed and characterized.
