Starting from two research experiences, the article reflects on a series of issues related to the limits of coastal planning in integrating the instances of economic management and collective use of the coast concerning the vulnerabilities of the land-sea interface. The first one is related to the integrated use of models based on remotely sensed geographical data and DSS for the definition of IT processes aimed at monitoring the criticalities of coastal areas and the identification of mitigation measures to be adopted, the second one (in progress) on the definition of an "extended" management model that makes it "self-sustainable" or even economically convenient, for communities and individuals, to take care of the fragile coastal territory. The objective is to seize the innovative elements of the control, management and entrusting tools of the coastal space for a more careful use of the environmental and hydro-geomorphological vulnerabilities and seasonally adjusted with uses suitable for this collective good.
