We study a symmetric semilinear elliptic problem in all R-N and we prove existence of an asymmetric positive solution by using variational arguments. The corresponding problem in dimension N = 2,which provides the motivation of this work, arises in Nonlinear Optics from the study of the behaviour of optical cylindrical waveguides.
