The form of the dispersed city. Principles and techniques of composition for its 'reform' is a doctoral thesis in Architectural and Urban Composition developed within the research path of City and Territory of the ArCoD department. Acknowledging the ongoing transformation of low-density inhabited territories spread across rural and natural areas on the outskirts of the city, the research is driven to consider them as an additional element with which current metropolitan planning must contend. The first chapter highlights the specific interest in the ‘after sprawl’ and geographically defines the research in the European context, investigating the phenomenon in five nations with geographical, political and socio-economic differences. Furthermore, it analyzes the main theories on the city aimed at resolving the phenomenon of urban expansion through low-density residential neighborhoods and recognizing the separation between city and countryside. The second chapter, of an empirical nature, addresses the identification of the form and spatial relationships among the 'new parts' of the contemporary city. By highlighting appropriate reading tools, the research aims to re-problematize the phenomenon of dispersion in terms of its morphological structure. Having recognized the propensity of aggregates to organize themselves into distinct forms, reflections emerge from these observations which lead to the formulation of morphological categories, starting from the scale of the city up to that of building types. The third chapter adopts a historical-critical approach, comparing five different design experiences deemed significant. The categorization of the selected projects is followed by an interpretative analysis of the interventions and operations, carried out through the instrument of critical redesign. The fourth and final chapter is the application part: it is structured as an atlas of compositional techniques for the transformation project of dispersed territories, proposing new spatial configurations, aggregative grammars and living spaces. The transformation of existing forms as a project of 're-form' is at the base of the intervention strategies of this research, which takes an inter-scalar perspective, structured into three intervention scales: territorial scale, aggregate scale and building type scale.

Abstract
The transformation of existing forms as a project of 're-form' is at the base of the intervention strategies of this research, which takes an inter-scalar perspective, structured into three intervention scales: territorial scale, aggregate scale and building type scale.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
