This research addresses the structural and figurative implications of restoring monumental modern reinforced concrete architecture, taking as its case study the Magazzino di Sofisticazione dei Sali (Salt Treatment Warehouse) designed by Pier Luigi Nervi at Margherita di Savoia (1933–36, extended in 1954). The thesis is grounded in the assumption that in modern reinforced concrete heritage the material is not a neutral support but the very site where form, structure and image achieve an indivisible unity: consequently, material decay cannot be read as a secondary or merely aesthetic issue, but as the point of intersection between conservation needs, structural requirements and figurative values. On the theoretical level, the work offers a critical rereading of the state of the art on the restoration of modern reinforced concrete, highlighting the tension between a technical-performance rationality and a historical-critical rationality, and restoring centrality to the Italian restauro tradition, too often marginalised in the international debate. On this basis, two complementary tools have been developed: an abacus of dominant deterioration processes affecting historic reinforced concrete — distinguishing between self-limiting and evolutive phenomena — and a systematised lexicon of visual manifestations, organised into twelve typologies according to morphological and perceptual criteria. On the applicative level, this twofold interpretive device is tested on Nervi's Warehouse, a work exposed to a persistent marine-saline environment and currently in an advanced state of decay. The research seeks to show that, in the restoration of monumental modern reinforced concrete architecture, deterioration is not a marginal accident to be technically repaired, but the critical threshold where the relationship between conservation of the material, structural safety, and the persistence of the architectural image is decided.
La ricerca affronta le implicazioni strutturali e figurative nel restauro dell'architettura monumentale moderna in calcestruzzo armato, assumendo come caso studio il Magazzino di Sofisticazione dei Sali progettato da Pier Luigi Nervi a Margherita di Savoia (1933–36, ampliato nel 1954). L'assunto da cui muove la tesi è che, nel patrimonio moderno in calcestruzzo armato, la materia non costituisca un supporto neutro ma il luogo in cui si realizza un'unitarietà inscindibile tra forma, struttura e immagine: di conseguenza il degrado materico non può essere letto come problema secondario o soltanto estetico, ma come punto di intersezione tra istanze conservative, esigenze strutturali e valori figurativi. Sul piano teorico, il lavoro propone una rilettura critica dello stato dell'arte sul restauro del calcestruzzo armato moderno, mettendo in luce la tensione tra una razionalità tecnico-prestazionale e una razionalità storico-critica e restituendo centralità ai contributi del restauro italiano spesso marginalizzati nel dibattito internazionale. Su questa base sono stati elaborati due strumenti complementari: un abaco dei processi degradativi dominanti del calcestruzzo armato storico — distinti tra autolimitanti ed evolutivi — e un lessico sistematizzato delle manifestazioni visive, organizzato in dodici tipologie secondo criteri morfologici e percettivi. Sul piano applicativo, il doppio dispositivo è stato messo alla prova sul Magazzino nerviano, opera esposta a un ambiente marino-salino persistente e oggi in avanzato stato di degrado. Il lavoro intende mostrare come, nel restauro dell'architettura monumentale moderna in calcestruzzo armato, il degrado non sia un accidente marginale da riparare tecnicamente, ma il luogo critico in cui si decide il rapporto tra conservazione della materia, sicurezza strutturale e permanenza dell'immagine architettonica.
