Chemically Assisted Primary Sedimentation (CAPS) or Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment (CEPT) consists of adding chemicals in order to increase the coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation of raw urban wastewater. The CAPS process have to be developed in order to assure both increasing in the efficacy of primary sedimentation and avoiding interference with biological treatment processes. The paper was focused on an experimental activity conducted in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Avellino, in the Campania Region, in Southern Italy. The aim of the performed activity was to verify the economical applicability of CAPS for the treatment of urban wastewater. In the first phase, the inlet wastewater was characterized and the best coagulant and relative dosage were chosen. While, in the second phase, the economical applicability of the CAPS was verified with regard to the studied WWTP. In the light of the performed hypothesis, good results were obtained in economical terms but some technical issues were revealed.
