The cascaded H-bridge multilevel converter is a versatile solution in many high-power and high-voltage industrial application. With the rising in the number of switches, the probability of failure increases, due to junction temperature that is produced by power losses, and hence reliability of the converter decreases. In the literature, various discontinuous modulation techniques have been introduced with the aim of minimizing the switching losses of multilevel converters. However, these techniques greatly degrade the harmonic quality of the output waveforms. Therefore, in this paper, a discontinuous PWM strategy based on a new shape of the carrier signal is proposed to the purpose of achieving the improvement of the output voltage waveform harmonic quality, while also decreasing switching losses. Experimental results are presented to assess the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Abstract

The cascaded H-bridge multilevel converter is a versatile solution in many high-power and high-voltage industrial application. With the rising in the number of switches, the probability of failure increases, due to junction temperature that is produced by power losses, and hence reliability of the converter decreases.
