Ports have always played a strategic role, serving as a point of reference for international economic relations and a crossroads of cultural and social exchange. In this context, port heritage constitutes a tangible sign of the passage of civilisation and a direct expression of needs, as well as the level of technological development. The rapid evolution of production models, particularly containerization, has encouraged the structural and/or functional adaptation of port assets to contemporary needs and ensured their continued use. However, this evolution has also led to the progressive abandonment of heritage assets that are unable to function synergistically with the current context. The preservation of historic port structures and infrastructure represents a valuable opportunity to enhance these areas, which must be recognised and integrated into broader urban regeneration processes, as well as maintained for ensuring their resilience to change. The adaptive reuse approach of abandoned or underutilised structures emerges in the literature, with the aim of revitalising heritage and its historical-cultural value, making it functional to contemporary needs and responsive to new requirements. Based on the above, this research project aims to develop a systematic and integrated methodological approach for the revitalisation of port structures and infrastructures with historical, architectural and industrial heritage characteristics, preserving their tangible and intangible maritime value and ensuring their reintegration into the port and urban context through compatible strategies. The methodological approach focuses on the recognition of the port's heritage and the systematic organisation of the cognitive system through the census and cataloguing of the assets within the port context. In this scenario, the identification of its conservation and use conditions is a fundamental milestone in the heritage qualification process. This objective is achieved through the implementation of a data-driven approach, employing the k-means method for the identification of clusters of recurring typologies. The results orient decisional recovery, revitalisation and enhancement strategies of port assets within the contemporary context. Then, starting from the analysis of successful national and international experiences, the meta-design strategies and associated technical solutions identified for the adaptive reuse of port assets are systematised within an atlas of meta-design strategies to support the definition of design solutions according to local specificities. The proposed design strategies are then evaluated according to success factors through a selection of qualitative and quantitative criteria capable of investigating key aspects. The establishment of these criteria is achieved through the involvement of a panel of experts, with the criteria then weighted according to their relevance to reuse processes using the AHP method. The validation of the proposed approach followed the entire methodological workflow and involved the analysis of Italian port areas and their port assets, with a focus on Port of Bari and its Palazzo della Dogana, as a case study for the implementation of the adaptive reuse strategies. The development of an integrated digital environment has finally been designed to integrate the knowledge and design solution management system by adopting GIS/BIM and VR/AR tools. The approach defined and validated for the port context ensures replicability in different contexts and scalability, supporting more informed decision-making processes and collaborative engagement for both expert and non-expert users.
Da sempre i porti hanno svolto un ruolo strategico, rappresentando un punto di riferimento per le relazioni economiche internazionali, ma anche crocevia di scambi culturali e sociali. In questo contesto, il patrimonio portuale ricopre un ruolo fondamentale, quale segno tangibile del passaggio della civiltà ed espressione diretta delle esigenze, nonché del livello di sviluppo tecnologico. Se da un lato la rapida evoluzione dei modelli produttivi, in particolare la containerizzazione, ha favorito l’adeguamento strutturale e/o funzionale di beni portuali, al fine di soddisfare le esigenze contemporanee e garantirne il mantenimento in uso; dall’altro ha indotto ad un progressivo abbandono delle stesse, laddove non in grado di essere sinergiche rispetto al contesto attuale. In particolare, la conservazione delle strutture e delle infrastrutture portuali storiche rappresenta una preziosa opportunità per la valorizzazione di queste aree, che richiedono di essere riconosciute ed integrate in processi più ampi di rigenerazione urbana, nonché di continuare ad essere resilienti ai cambiamenti. L’approccio del riuso adattivo di strutture abbandonate o sottoutilizzate, emerge in letteratura, con l’obiettivo di preservare e valorizzare il patrimonio e il suo valore storico-culturale, rendendolo funzionale alle esigenze contemporanee e rispondente alle nuove necessità. In tale scenario, il presente lavoro di ricerca si propone di sviluppare un approccio metodologico sistematico ed integrato finalizzato al recupero, riuso e valorizzazione di un sistema di strutture e infrastrutture con connotati di patrimonio storico-architettonico-industriale, preservando il loro valore tangibile e intangibile legato alla pratica del mare e garantendo il loro reinserimento nel contesto portuale, nonché urbano, attraverso strategie compatibili. Il flusso metodologico si articola a partire dal riconoscimento del patrimonio portuale e sistematizzazione del sistema di conoscenze attraverso il censimento e catalogazione sistematica dei beni presenti nel contesto portuale. In tale scenario, l’identificazione delle sue condizioni di conservazione e di uso costituisce condizione fondamentale nel processo di qualificazione del patrimonio, attraverso l’individuazione di cluster, mediante metodo k-means, al fine di orientare strategie di recupero, riqualificazione e valorizzazione del patrimonio portuale all’interno del contesto contemporaneo secondo una visione armonizzata e strutturata. Partendo dall'analisi delle esperienze nazionali e internazionali di successo, le strategie di meta-progettazione e le soluzioni tecniche individuate per il riuso adattivo dei beni portuali sono sistematizzate in un atlante di strategie di meta-progettazione a supporto della definizione di soluzioni progettuali in accordo con le specificità locali. Le strategie progettuali proposte sono successivamente valutate rispetto ai fattori di successo, attraverso una selezione di criteri qualitativi e quantitativi capaci di indagare gli aspetti fondamentali, definiti coinvolgendo un panel di esperti e pesati rispetto alla loro rilevanza nei processi di riuso, mediante l’applicazione del metodo AHP. La validazione dell'approccio proposto ha ripercorso l'intero workflow metodologico, riguardando l'analisi delle aree portuali italiane e del loro patrimonio portuale e concentrando l'attenzione sul Porto di Bari e il suo Palazzo della Dogana, quale caso di studio per l'implementazione delle strategie di riuso adattivo. Lo sviluppo di un ambiente digitale integrato è stato progettato per integrare il sistema di gestione delle conoscenze e delle soluzioni progettuali adottando strumenti GIS/BIM e VR/AR. L’approccio definito validato per il contesto portuale garantisce replicabilità in contesti diversi e scalabilità, supportando processi decisionali più informati condivisi, collaborativi e coinvolgenti sia per gli utenti esperti che per quelli non esperti.
